What to Put in a Gift Hamper: Ideas for Every Occasion
A good gift hamper has four parts: one hero item that sets the theme, a mix of sweet and savoury food, something that lasts after the food is gone, and a personal message. The Hamper Boutique Co builds its hampers, from $70 to $475, around shelf-stable gourmet food so they travel safely, with free standard delivery Australia-wide.
At a glance
Below is the checklist we work from, what to put in a hamper for each occasion with real examples, how to balance sweet and savoury, and what to leave out.
What should go in a gift hamper?
Start with the person, not the basket. Ask what they would buy for themselves on a good day, then build around it. The checklist:
- One hero item. The piece the hamper is named for: a bottle of sparkling or Shiraz, a single malt, a gin, a tea collection, a serving board. It sets the theme and takes the largest share of the budget.
- Savoury. Crackers, olives, nuts and a condiment or two, such as Valley Produce Company crackers, Kangaroo Island olives, Nutworks macadamias, a Beerenberg sauce or a Daylesford Condiment Company chutney. Shelf-stable cheese snacks belong here too.
- Sweet. Chocolate, shortbread and biscuits: Lakker Chocolatiers dark chocolate, Whittaker's, a butter shortbread or Charlie's Vanilla Bean Mini Melting Moments.
- Something that lasts. A serving board, coasters, a candle or a hand cream keeps the gift in use after the last biscuit.
- The words and the wrapping. A message that could only come from you, and presentation that makes the first look count.
Every hamper we send covers that last point for you. It arrives in a gift box with a hand-tied ribbon and milk chocolates, with a free printed personalised message on an A5 compliments slip and the matching printed occasion card where the message calls for one. From $100, the box is a high GSM white or black magnetic keepsake box with a golden bow and matte finish, at no extra cost. Stuck for words? Our gift message ideas page has examples for every occasion.
What to put in a hamper for each occasion
The checklist stays the same; the hero item changes with the moment. These are real hampers from our range:
| Occasion | Hero item | Around it | Example hamper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birthday | Sparkling | Pampering pieces for the morning after | Chandon Bubbles and Treats Hamper, $115 |
| Thank you, or a team to share with | Afternoon tea treats | Shortbread, hot chocolate, cheese bites | Sweet and Savoury Delights Hamper, $105 |
| A hard week, get well or sympathy | Tea | Hand care, a diffuser, a conserve | Relax and Rejuvenate Tea Hamper, $140 |
| New home or settlement | Homeware | Serving pieces for the first dinner | Luxe Homeware Hamper, $160 |
| A host or a dinner party | Shiraz | A full grazing spread | Deluxe Grazing Gift Hamper, $155 |
| Christmas | Plum pudding | Festive biscuits and a sauce | Sweet Traditions, $80 |
The Chandon Bubbles and Treats Hamper ($115) pairs Chandon Brut NV, an Australian sparkling, with a Tilley Tahitian Frangipani hand and body wash, hand and nail cream and soy wax melts: a toast tonight and a slow morning tomorrow. The Sweet and Savoury Delights Hamper ($105) is built for sharing, with two shortbreads (one classic, one with macadamias), an organic hot chocolate, cheese bites and nibbles, a cranberry sauce and a chocolate liqueur sauce.
The Relax and Rejuvenate Tea Hamper ($140) holds 96 Degrees English Breakfast and Love Tea green tea, a Flwr Sugared Rose diffuser, a raspberry and blackberry conserve and Tilley hand care: a gentle gift when words are hard to find. The Luxe Homeware Hamper ($160) is all homeware apart from the milk chocolates every hamper carries: Ladelle Nixon coasters, a Maxwell and Williams Livvi cheese and paté set, a Menara serving board, a Gibson platter and Grind shakers.
The Deluxe Grazing Gift Hamper ($155) does the opposite, with Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz, smoked kalamata olives, Daylesford chilli chutney, two kinds of Valley Produce Company crackers and Whittaker's sea salt caramel chocolate. And Sweet Traditions ($80) is Christmas baking in a box: a plum pudding, a Scottie Dog shortbread, a brandy butterscotch sauce and gingerbread biscuits. $155How do you balance sweet and savoury in a hamper?
Aim for roughly half and half, then tilt toward what the recipient reaches for first. Some hampers commit to one side: the Savoury Selection Gift Hamper ($85) is almost entirely savoury, with a spicy salsa, Nutworks salted chilli macadamias, antipasto olives, a Shiraz and Valley Produce Company crackers. A few rules keep the mix interesting:
- Vary the texture. Something crunchy (crackers, macadamias), something soft (melting moments, a fudgy brownie biscuit) and something to spread (a jam, chutney or mustard).
- Add a little heat. Chilli macadamias, a chilli chutney or a peri peri sauce stop a hamper from tasting one-note.
- Match the food to the drink. Shiraz with chutney, olives and crackers; sparkling with dark chocolate; tea with shortbread and jam; gin with salty, spicy snacks.
- Include one thing to make, not just eat. A hot chocolate, a pudding with its sauce, or a condiment for the next barbecue stretches the gift beyond one sitting.
- Think about the household. A hamper for a family home needs something for everyone; a hamper for one person can be more particular.
For more pairings, our guide to sweet and savoury hamper combinations goes item by item.
What should you not put in a gift hamper?
Leave out anything that will not survive the journey or suit the person opening it.
- Perishables. We do not include perishable items like fresh flowers, fresh fruit or fresh cheese, because everything is built to travel safely across Australia. Standard delivery to regional areas is estimated at 2 to 10 business days, so shelf-stable is the rule.
- Alcohol for the wrong person. Alcohol can only go to someone 18 or over, inside a hamper with non-alcoholic items, and it is always handed to an adult rather than left at the door. If you are not sure they drink, choose one of our 27 alcohol-free hampers.
- Too much of one thing. Five kinds of chocolate is a box of chocolates, not a hamper. Variety is what makes it feel chosen.
- Things they will not use. Scented products for someone who prefers unscented, or ingredients they avoid. For dietary needs, talk to our team about a custom hamper.
- Filler. Shredded paper and empty space make a hamper look bigger and feel cheaper. A smaller hamper with good pieces says more.
Should you make a hamper yourself or order one?
Making a hamper yourself works when you have time, a clear theme and a recipient nearby. You will need a box or basket, packing that keeps glass upright, the items themselves, wrapping, a card and a courier. If you go that way, start with the hero item, choose five to eight supporting pieces, pack the heaviest items at the base and write the card last.
Ordering one makes sense when the hamper has to travel, when you are sending several, or when presentation matters. With us, the box, ribbon, milk chocolates and printed message are included, standard delivery is free Australia-wide, and every delivery is tracked. Orders placed before 11am Melbourne time on a business day are dispatched the same day; later orders go out the next business day. Questions about what goes in a gift hamper
What is a hamper?
A hamper is a gift of food, drink and small treats packed together around a theme, traditionally in a basket and now often in a gift box. Ours arrive in a gift box with a hand-tied ribbon, and from $100 in a magnetic keepsake box.
How many items should a gift hamper have?
There is no fixed number; balance matters more than count. Our hampers range from a few focused pieces, as in the Glenfiddich Tasting Hamper ($160) with a single malt and two kinds of macadamias, to a generous 18 items in the Tea Time Gourmet Hamper ($235).
Why don't your hampers include perishable food?
We do not include perishable items like fresh flowers, fresh fruit or fresh cheese, because everything is built to travel safely across Australia. Shelf-stable cheese snacks, such as three-cheese bites, still feature in many of our hampers.
What can I put in a hamper for someone who doesn't drink?
Build it around tea, hot chocolate, sweet and savoury food or homeware instead of a bottle. We have 27 alcohol-free hampers, including the Relax and Rejuvenate Tea Hamper ($140) and the Luxe Homeware Hamper ($160).
Can you make a hamper around a theme I choose?
Yes. We build custom hampers around a specific budget, dietary requirement, theme, or recipient profile. Talk to our team about what you have in mind, including any dietary needs, on +61 3 7046 4648 or at hello@thehamperboutique.com.au.
